Your Lytle Cross Country teams traveled to the National Shooting Center in San Antonio for the 2013 Region IV Cross Country Championships on Saturday. After having the volleyball girls capture a 3rd place playoff game and the football team capturing a district title in Hondo we knew we had to complete the cycle.
Natalie Cortez led the girls to their highest finish ever in 3A as a team as she captured 3rd and qualified for the state meet. She is the first girl to qualify for state in 3A for Lytle Cross Country. She helped set the pace for Vanessa Estrada 42nd, Cierra Cuenca 73rd , Leala Marquez 81st, Angelica Cuenca 96th and Bethania Botello 148th out of 170 runners as they finished 9th as a team out of 24 schools. I was very proud of their effort all year and all their hard work paid off on Saturday.
Though the boys didn't have their best effort of the year, they managed to overcome a slow start and finish 2nd as a team. That was good enough to qualify them for state for the 2nd year in a row and the 3rd time in the last 5 years. Jethro Stokes led the way with an 8th place finish, which qualified him as an individual state qualifier (top 10). Alex Herrera ran a personal best to finish 12th and garner All-Regional honors. Elijah Marquez came in 16th, Landon Vasquez 36th, Jacob Ivie 43rd, Gabino Olalde 70th, and Misael Angeles 96th out of 184 runners.
The boys team and Natalie Cortez now get ready to travel to Round Rock this weekend in hopes of bringing home a medal for their efforts. It will be their hardest test of the year and we hope that we can be at our best on Saturday. I want to thank everyone who went out and supported us this Saturday. I hope that you enjoyed watching our kids succeed and because of you they were able to achieve those goals.
