Your Lytle Pirates traveled to historic Barry Field in Hondo and made their own history by winning their first football District Championship in 25 years, and first ever in 3A!  The Pirates also won their first ever varsity game over Hondo.  These feats were not by chance, the boys committed last November to winning a title and they have done everything that has been asked of them.  The hours of weight lifting from November through August, 7 on 7 games, summer conditioning, etc.  The Pirates truly know that hard work does indeed pay off!
The final score was 37-27, but the game was well in hand with a 37-14 lead late in the fourth quarter. We had outstanding performances from several Pirates.
Offensively the Pirates racked up 300 yards.  Brian Bippert was 8-14 for 94 yards passing and 2 touchdowns.  Nate Medrano led all rushers with 130 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Christian Cedeno had 25 tough yards and a touchdown.  Armando Martinez had 25 yards and a touchdown.  Ronald Montgomery had 1 touchdown and 46 yards receiving including another acrobatic catch that kept the chains moving.  Xavier Huerta had 21 yards receiving and a great catch at the end of the half for a momentum swinging touchdown that gave the Pirates an 18-14 half time lead.
The Wrecking Crew played a great game for 43 minutes before having a lapse and giving up 2 late touchdowns to make the score closer than what it was.  Connor Hoffman, John Santos, Dean Santos, and Dylan Aguinaga led the Linebackers in tackles.  It was great to see Dylan return from injury and do well.  The defensive line was led by Armando Martinez, and Orlando Medrano.  The secondary had good performances by Miguel Guajardo, Chaz Graham, and Joseph Soria.
Clinging to a 4 point lead at the half, the Pirates came out blazing on both sides of the ball.  The Wrecking Crew produced 2 key turnovers, and the offensive line imposed its will on the Hondo defense and opened up huge running lanes that led to time consuming drives that ended in touchdowns.  How about them O Linemen!  Great job by Paul Castro, Jonathan Ramirez, Ian Salazar, Brandon Hernandez, and Joshua Macat.  The trench warfare favored the Pirates!
The Pirates close out 29-AAA play on Friday at home against the Crystal City Javelinas.  Come out and support the 29-AAA District Champions!  We will be looking to polish up our game and get ready for a playoff run.  Let’s send these seniors out with a huge crowd at their last home game.  As always, Let’s get Loud! Rowdy! And Lytle Proud!
Go Pirates!
