Lytle Pirate softball stormed into the second round of district play with JV leading off the wins, once again cruising to a 12-3 victory.  These ladies are on a hot streak with some electric hitting and it has been fun to watch their defense improve every game. Not only are they winning but a large number of girls are getting in every game and enjoying this season!  They are now 6-0 in district competition.

Varsity entered the game with their first 2 game losing streak of the year, a first loss at home and the girls were rattled mentally by some things in the last week and really needed to pull together for each other as a team.  Wins are the ultimate goal, but staying strong to the finish, overcoming adversity and focusing on the things we can control are items we are trying to work on not only as athletes, but to survive the jungle of life and everything that comes along with being a teenager and eventually an adult.  I may need some therapy when it's all over with ;)   On top of some fragile feelings, we lost our starting senior catcher at lunchtime to injury diagnosis and the girls handled the news better than I could have imagined.  A quick roster shift and the girls put the game face on for the battle.

Devine jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 4 innings, but the girls never wavered.  They were putting the ball in play yet couldn't catch any breaks.  Until the top of the 5th when 3 runs crossed the plate to even the game at 3!  The game stayed deadlocked through 6, 7, 8 innings with both teams getting out of jams with great defense and pitching. The Parent Night crowd was getting edgy and every pitch for the last half of the game felt like it could be the last.  In the top of the 9th, the momentum finally hit Lytle for good and 3 more runs came in for the Pirates.  Devine scratched 1 across in the bottom of the 9th and threatened with a runner at 3rd, but the girls ended the rally with the third out.  Every girl in the dugout played in this team win.  The Pirates banged out 20 hits and only committed one error in the victory.

Varsity raises their overall record to 14-7 and a 3-3 mark in district play.  #sprangbrake!  Boerne comes to visit Friday for a 5/7pm contest.

I rarely talk about individuals because each and every girl on both teams is truly having a great year, BUT….

AM Radio fans:  Paul Harvey narration voice please…..

She thought she was in trouble when Coach pulled her out of art class and said that she was going to be the starting catcher for varsity that night even though she played the most time at 3B for JV to help the team.  Nervously excited, she tried to take it in still not sure of what she just heard.  He told her… no pressure, just be you and we'll all be there with you to help.  The bus pulled in and she had her first team talk with her new squad and they made her feel like she'd been there for weeks.  Same warmups, same game, different faces.  The game got going and she was locked in feeding on the confidence and support from her new teammates.  2 singles, a double, a triple, hit after hit the Arabians were not able to get her out while her defense led to several crucial outs and worked well with a dominating pitcher.  When the infield dust settled after an extra innings marathon win against a district and community foe, people wondered just who was that masked catcher new to the roster?  Sports have a funny way of scripting little fairy tales sometimes and this time was for the good guys.  And #15 behind the plate and on base four times? The one that asked to give a former favorite teacher a hug before stretching…..Why that would be Sunny Ornales, a 10th grade student new to Lytle this semester…former student of, you guessed it.  Devine.  I'm, Coach Adams and that's…the rest…of the story.  Good day.
