The Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team competed against the Hondo Owls last night. The Pirates and Owls were tied at the end of the first quarter and the Owls took only a 1 point lead in to the half. The score continued to remain close throughout the rest of the game but turnovers once again proved detrimental for the Pirates. Despite the loss, effort was good, play continues to improve, and we competed through the final buzzer. Standout performances came from: (JR) Noah Vasquez 17pts, (SO) Jorge Holguin 9pts, (SR) Deandre Harden 7pts/5rebounds, (SR) Alex Mullins 7pts/7rebounds. The Pirates will play on the road in Blanco this Friday.
JV Boys Basketball
The Boys’ JV Basketball Team played against Hondo last night. The Owls were a fast and athletic team who shot the ball well (easily one of the better JV teams we have faced this season) allowing them to go up early in the game. Your Pirates however played hard and never let up throughout the game, steadily closing the point deficit. Outstanding shooting from Junior Point Guard Jorge Holguin and Sophomore guard Adam Castro kept the Pirates in the game. Defensive stops made by Junior Forward Kobe Castro and Sophomore Guard Tristan Lowery slowed down the Owls second half attack. Junior Post, David Aguilar and Sophomore Forward Adrian Soto contributed significantly on the boards. The Pirates lost 58-68. The Pirates will play in Blanco this Friday.
Yesterday, your freshman boys traveled to Hondo for a non-district contest and unfortunately we fell short to the Owls losing 62-38. We fought hard for most of the 1st half but struggled to score and play defense in the second half. We were once again led in scoring by Robert Ibarra, 23 points. Our record falls to 2-3 on the season and for the season our leading scorers are, Robert Ibarra 15 points per game and Jaron Calderon 7 points per game. The freshman next play Fox Tech next week here at home.
