Mother Nature loomed in the area yesterday, causing the Lytle Pirate softball team to shift game times to make sure their district contest with Bandera was able to be played.  The Varsity took the early spot and the crowded stands saw an awesome pitcher’s duel.  Neither offense was able to get action on the other as great pitching and timely defense kept the score locked at 0-0.  Macy Smith struck out 15 Bulldogs and never wavered in keeping the team’s confidence up throughout the battle.

Lytle escaped a scoring threat in the top of the 8th and the girls were ready to try and end it the next frame.  After a leadoff strikeout, Sam Dear took a pitch in the knee for the second straight at bat.  Jalyn Aguinaga hit a shot to centerfield, but it was corralled for the second out.  Leadoff hitter Kayla Herrera kept the two out rally going with a line shot to center which advanced runners to 1st and 2nd.  With the infield playing back, speedster Jahzlyn Aguinaga laid down a great bunt towards third that the pitcher could not react to in time and made an off balance throw to 1st.  Sam Dear aggressively never stopped running around third with 2 outs and the first baseman hesitated just enough before trying to make a throw to the plate.  Dear slid in, the throw was a fraction too late, the umpire signaled safe and Lytle walked it off with a 1-0 nail biter.

It was a lot of fun mobbing Sam at home plate and Jahzlyn in the infield to say the least.  The team showed awesome heart staying focused in a game that had the potential to go either way at any moment.  The girls raise their record to 7-1 in district and 20-5 overall.  Lytle will host Fredericksburg at home this Friday due to the weather shift earlier in season.
