The Lytle Pirate Softball team took a 2 game district lead into their battle with Fredericksburg Friday night and played their hearts out for a full 7 innings. Jalyn Aguinaga scored on a Macy Smith single in the third inning to give Lytle a 1-0 lead, but things went dramatically south in the 5th inning as Fred scored 4 runs on hits and some sloppy Pirate play.
Except for that one inning, Lytle’s defense was strong- even with a rearranged lineup due to injury. Macy Smith kept Fred in check with 10 strikeouts and both the Pirate outfield and infield made multiple plays to get out of jams.
The Pirates huddled in the bottom of the 5th and the goal was to get one run in each of their last three at bats to tie the game. Jahzlyn Aguinaga scored in the 5th on a Carli Diver grounder. Sunny Ornales scored in the 6th off a Kayla Herrera hit. The Pirates loaded the bases in the 7th inning and the excitement was growing. Macy Smith scored from 3rd on a wild pitch to tie the game and with one out, Sunny Ornales delivered the magic hit in the infield to draw a late throw home as Carli Diver slid in for the dramatic come from behind victory to give Lytle a 5-4 win and an outright DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
The excitement in the girls’ faces celebrating on our field with teammates, coaches, family and friends was a memory that will be hard to ever forget! The girls sit at 21-5 overall, 8-1 in district play with Hondo left on our schedule for Parents Night at home on Tuesday. Obviously, the weather will be playing a major issue this week so gameday will be in limbo.
