The only thing similar to Thursday night's game one against Pearsall was the first inning when a Macy Smith blast over the fence scored 3 runs to start off the game for the Lytle Pirate softball team. From then on, the girls battled the heat, a relief pitcher on fire and withstood 4 Maverick rallies to come out victorious in a 9-7 thriller.
Lytle added to their lead in the 2nd on a Sadie Bippert misplayed pop-up; 3 more came across in the 3rd on a Smith walk and 4 straight hits by Carli Diver, Deja Darby, Precious Carrillo and Sam Dear and 2 final runs in the 5th on a Carrillo walk and Bippert triple.
Pearsall aggressively rallied in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th innings, but each time the Pirate defense had enough cushion on the scoreboard to escape the jam each time and maintain their control of the game. The Lady Mavs would not go away- every at bat, seeing and fouling off tons of pitches trying to get on base.
Smith struck out the final batter of the game in the bottom of the 7th to preserve a 9-7 victory and a series sweep to earn the Pirates a Bi-District title on the road. The victories raise the girls' overall record to 24-5 on the season. They will begin preparing for a matchup with Orange Grove this weekend. The girls and I were so appreciative of all our fans that supported us with noise and encouragement throughout both games!! It was an emotional weekend and we're honored to continue our run in the tournament.
